Black rice, known in ancient China as "forbidden rice" because only nobles could consume it, is one of the so-called "Super foods", reports the Telegraph

Researchers at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge are adamant that a tablespoon of black rice bran contains more antioxidants than blueberries, but with less sugar and more fiber and vitamin E.

Like berries, black rice is rich in antioxidants that have a proven protective effect on cardiovascular disease, cancer and other diseases, says study co-author Dr. Zhimin Xu,

Dr. Zhimin Xu and colleagues studied samples of black rice grown in the southern United States, and found that it contains a large amount of antioxidants and is high in minerals and amino acids. According to researchers, black rice is healthier even than brown.

The results of the study were presented at a meeting of the American Society of Chemistry in Boston.
