Daily consumption of carbonated diet drinks increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a study by Columbia University and the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. 

 
Diet soft drinks often contain artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, which has been linked to other health problems, such as cancer. 
 
Previous studies have shown that soft drinks, which are high in artificial sweeteners, can lead to liver disease, similar to that caused by chronic alcoholism. 
 
Due to the lower calorie content, "diet" carbonated drinks are offered as a healthier alternative to those with more fat. But their real health benefits remain unclear, scientists say. According to some studies, they even increase appetite. 
 
In the current study, researchers analyzed beverage consumption among 2,564 people over a 10-year period, including the risk of stroke, heart attack and vascular death.
 
They found that participants who drank diet soft drinks every day were 43% more likely to experience a cardiovascular accident than people who did not consume them. 
 
The mechanisms by which these products affect health are still unclear, experts add. 
 
The results are published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine .
