The additive E 104 is synthetic and is defined as moderately dangerous (may be harmful to health). In the food industry it is used as a colorant.

Quinoline yellow has a yellow-green color. It is an organic compound of heterocyclic type. Used to dissolve sulfur and phosphorus.

The food supplement is divided into 2 types:

  • soluble in water (Quinoline yellow WS) and soluble in alcohol (Quinoline yellow SS). The chemical formula of the food additive E 104 is C18H9NO8S2Na2.

Studies show that the use of this substance in food leads to hyperactivity in children, can cause skin inflammation, urticaria, anaphylaxis, asthma attacks. The dye is contraindicated for people sensitive to aspirin.

In September 2009, the European Food Standards Agency significantly limited the maximum permitted levels for the use of the additive. The daily amount is reduced from 10 mg / kg to 0.5 mg / kg body weight. This decision was made as a result of research showing that overuse of the substance can cause urticaria and rhinitis.

In the food industry, E 104 is found in smoked fish, groceries, beverages, colored dragees, lollipops and chewing gum.

This supplement is also used:

  • in perfumery - for making colognes;
  • in cosmetics - for the production of lipsticks, paints and others;
  • in the production of soaps and hair care products;
  • in medicine - the derivatives of the product are used;
  • for making toothpaste.

The food supplement E 104 is banned in a number of countries because it has an adverse effect on health. For example, such countries are: Japan, USA, Norway.
