Characteristic

E 124 refers to food colors of chemical origin. Represents sodium salt in the form of powder or granules of red color. In combination with other colors, the additive colors the products in yellow, orange, brown and purple. It dissolves well in water and does not break down under the influence of oxidants and temperature changes. Products treated with this substance may be exposed to any effects (sterilization, cooling, freezing, pasteurization). Ponceau 4R has a long shelf life, refers to hazardous substances.

Use

In the food industry, E 124 is used to impart and restore the color of products. It is used to color sausages and fish products, seafood and canned fruits (including berries). It is used in the production of desserts, pastries and confectionery (cakes, candies, puddings); also in making ice cream and dairy desserts.

The colorant E 124 is also used in other types of industry: in the production of liquid detergents for coloring shampoos, liquid soap, gels, bath and shower foams, for dyeing wool and silk in the textile industry, and in cosmetics - for the preparation of makeup.

Effects on the human body

E 124 refers to carcinogenic substances that cause cancer in living organisms. The additive is banned for use in many countries (USA, Norway, Finland). In addition, Ponceau 4R is the cause of allergic reactions, shortness of breath; in children - overexcitation and increased activity and is contraindicated for children and people sensitive to aspirin.
