Characteristic

The food supplement E 227 is a greenish liquid with a pronounced sulfur odor. In acidic environments it forms the preservative sulfuric acid. It is obtained artificially - sulfur dioxide is passed through an aqueous suspension of synthetic calcium hydroxide. After the chemical reaction, the dietary supplement calcium hydroxide (E 227) is obtained. It may contain impurities of various sulfites, sulfates, free alkalis and their carbonates. After evaporation of the calcium hydroxide and its complete drying, the addition of calcium sulphite (E 226) is obtained.

Calcium hydrogen sulfite belongs to the group of preservatives and antioxidants, prolongs the shelf life of products, prevents the growth of fungi and bacteria, sterilizes alcoholic beverages, is a disinfectant. It belongs to the additives with a medium level of danger.

Use

Preservative E 227 is widely used in the food industry. It is added to frozen semi-finished potatoes, mustard, in various marinades, vinegar, in confectionery to extend the shelf life of non-alcoholic fruit juices and dried fruits, also in the production of beer.

Impact on humans

Once in the human body, calcium gyrosulfite is oxidized and rapidly excreted in the urine. But not all living organisms (both animals and humans) have the necessary amount of enzymes needed for the oxidation of E 227. This supplement destroys important vitamin B1, adversely affects the kidneys, lungs, liver, may caused a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. The permissible daily amount of preservative is up to 0.7 mg per kilogram of body weight.

The substance is banned for use in Ukraine, New Zealand, Australia and some other countries because it has not passed the required tests at the required level.
