Characteristics

Calcium lactate is a dietary supplement that belongs to the group of antioxidants capable of preventing oxidation and certain changes in food. E 327 is a fine white powder with a faint odor. The substance evaporates easily, dissolves slowly in cold water and rapidly in hot; in ethanol, chloroform and ether the solubility is not good. Calcium lactate contains 13% calcium. Obtained by neutralizing lactic acid.

Use

The additive E 327 is widely used in pharmacology. It is recommended for use by people suffering from hypocalcemia, allergic and skin diseases, also in case of increased permeability of blood vessels and insufficiency of the parathyroid gland. Calcium lactate is good to use in:

  • increased need for calcium, especially during pregnancy, lactation, growth
  • insufficient calcium intake through food
  • increased calcium excretion, for example in chronic diarrhea, secondary hypocalcaemia, with long-term use of certain drugs (diuretics, anticonvulsants or corticosteroids).

E 327 can be used for bleeding and fluoric and oxalic acid poisoning. It is possible to add lactate in bakery and confectionery products in order to improve the flour; as a stabilizer in the preservation of beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, other vegetables and fruits; as a salt to maintain acidity in the production of jams and marmalades.

Impact on humans

Calcium lactate has a detoxifying effect on the human body and is a tool that provides the necessary amount of calcium in the absence of such. Calcium ions ensure the normal functioning of the myocardium, maintain the level of blood clotting.

Sufferers of hypersensitivity, thrombosis, severe atherosclerosis, hypercalcaemia associated with sarcoidosis and bone metastases should avoid the supplement. In excessive use, the substance may cause heartburn.
