Characteristic

The additive is a stabilizer that preserves and improves the viscosity and consistency of food. It is a hard white wax or fine powder with a bitter taste and a pronounced odor of octanol.

Use

E 480 is used in the food industry as an aid in the production of sugar, as well as a stabilizing agent in the preparation of hydrocolloid powders. It is used to facilitate the dissolution of substances in cold water. It is also used as a substance to improve the binding of granules in an aqueous medium, as a dispersant and solubilizer for fats and oils. In medicine it is used in the form of a laxative.

Impact on humans

Excessive consumption of products containing the supplement can lead to severe inflammatory processes in the mucous membranes of the body and especially the digestive organs. E 480 is capable of causing acute stomach upset. The permissible daily dose is not more than 0.25 mg.

Sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate is a relatively aggressive substance and may adversely affect the skin. The additive is a strong allergen, so even when working with it, certain safety measures must be taken. In case of contact with eyes (during production) it is necessary to immediately rinse with water and seek medical advice. To prevent inhalation, workers should wear protective masks. The rooms in which the product is handled must be equipped with a ventilation system.
