Characteristic

The substance sodium sulfate can be found in nature in the form of the minerals thenardite and mirabilite. Food additive E 514 is a white crystalline powder or crystals without a specific color. It dissolves well in water and is practically insoluble in ethanol. It is obtained from natural resources by the interaction of sulfuric acid with sodium hydroxide or common salt, also by the separation of mirabilite from salt lake water and subsequent dehydration.

Use

In the food industry, E 514 acts as a filler and acidity regulator. Sodium sulphate is more widely used in other industries. For example, it was widely used in the manufacture of synthetic detergents, but many countries later abandoned this practice because they switched to the use of concentrated detergents. The glass, leather and textile industries do not do without E 514. It is also used in non-ferrous metallurgy. Previously, the substance was used in medicine as a saline laxative and as a means of effective nasal lavage. In addition, it has been given to people with poisoning because sodium sulfate slows down the absorption of the poison. It is part of drugs intended for the treatment of constipation, hemorrhoids, hypertensive crisis.

Impact on humans

No significant adverse effects on human health have been known since the substance was used in the food industry. In large quantities can lead to upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea. In certain doses E 514 is useful.
