Characteristics: Calcium oxide is an odorless powder or is a solid hygroscopic mass with a white (gray-white) color. The additive is soluble in glycerin, insoluble in ethanol, in combination with water.

Calcium oxide is an odorless powder or a white (gray-white) solid hygroscopic mass. The additive dissolves in glycerin, is insoluble in ethanol, in combination with water forms slaked lime.

Use

E 529 is used in the production of bakery products as an improver of flour and bread in an amount determined by the technological process. The additive is one of the ingredients of complex bakery improvers. It serves as a nutrient medium for yeast. In confectionery and bakery production it is able to maintain certain pH values, thus regulating the acidity of products. As a filtering and clarifying material, sorbent and flocculant, the additive is used in the sugar industry. In the production of edible oils, calcium oxide is used as a catalyst for hydrogenation (residue not more than 0.1 mg / kg). The substance is used to process the water used to make alcoholic beverages.

Calcium oxide is used in the manufacture of additives for sulfate, alkylsalicylate oils. In the chemical industry - for the production of calcium stearate and others. It is also used for making brake pads. In construction it is used for the production of cheap refractory material, it is part of dry construction mixtures.

Impact on humans

When working with calcium oxide in the production, the prescribed safety measures must be observed (wear safety goggles and gloves). As a food additive, E 529 does not adversely affect health. Following hygiene standards, the amount of the substance in food is safe for humans.
