The food supplement E 578 has been sufficiently studied and is widely used in various industries. Calcium gluconate is a white crystalline or granular powder, soluble in water, and poor solubility in alcohol and ethers. The supplement is obtained synthetically and contains about 9% calcium.
In the food industry, the additive E 578 is part of various sweets, milk formulas for children, beverages containing coffee. It is also used in the production of cosmetics, and is also used in agriculture in the preparation of animal feed.
Calcium is necessary for the normal functioning of the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, to maintain water-electrolyte balance. The drug "Calcium gluconate" compensates for the lack of calcium, thus contributing to the supply of nerve impulses, the contraction of skeletal muscles, as well as blood clotting and bone formation. It is prescribed for diseases such as: osteoporosis, rickets, hypoparathyroidism. Calcium gluconate is indicated during pregnancy and lactation, in bleeding of various etiologies, in some diseases of the liver and kidneys. Large amounts of dietary supplement E 578 can cause gastrointestinal upset.
