Did you make a mistake with cayenne pepper or did you add too much hot pepper flakes to your dish, did you add too much hot pepper or did you just not judge how much hotness suits your dish? We can reassure you that this happens to everyone! The question is how to save the dish if it is too spicy?

Spicy is different from salt and sugar. While the saltiness and sweetness are controlled by the amounts of salt and sugar you add, this is not the case with hotness, it may turn out that in a very small amount there is a hell of a lot of hotness! Here's what you can do:

Try it!

In English there is a term for this - Taste As You Go! This means trying the dish all the time so that you can taste it properly. The approach is as follows - try before adding the spices (salt, sugar, hot), in the middle of cooking and just before serving.

The downside is that this way you will have a huge amount of the dish, but you can always freeze the rest or store it in the fridge for up to a week.

Balance the spiciness

Once you have diluted the dish, you can do something about it to reduce the spiciness by achieving a balance with the other spices. For this purpose, it is good to add a little dairy or something sweet.

Dairy products contain casein, which binds to capsaicin (the active ingredient in hot peppers) and neutralizes their taste.

Sweet ingredients such as sugar and honey also balance the spiciness. Thus, our tongue will again feel a slight spiciness and a new taste of sweetness, but again it is important to be careful not to face a new problem - too sweet a dish.
