Here are some more products and their possible substitutes in the preparation of dishes:

  • Shallots - replace with ordinary small onions;
  • Leeks - again we use ordinary onions, maybe the opposite: for a softer taste instead of onions - leeks;
  • Olive oil - with any vegetable oil, but dishes with olive oil are more useful;
  • Oregano and marjoram are interchangeable;
  • Tomatoes - sometimes ketchup and tomato paste do the same job;
  • Chocolate - instead of a piece of chocolate use 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil;
  • Agar or gelatin;
  • Asparagus - replace with broccoli in salads and sauces or any other vegetable with a delicate taste and texture (cauliflower);
  • Wasabi (Japanese spice) - instead we use horseradish (or sauce from it) or mustard, but the color can not be replaced by anything;
  • Daikon - with ordinary radishes or turnips;
  • Carambola - the taste of this fruit resembles a harmonious combination of green gooseberries, apple and cucumber. We use some of the listed plants, depending on the dish.
  • Quark (soft German cheese that looks like cottage cheese) - replace with cream cheese;
  • Pomelo (a variety of grapefruit with a milder taste) - we replace it with orange, because its taste is closer to orange;
  • Papaya - the closest is the taste of melon;
  • Parsnip is a creamy yellow long root resembling a carrot. It can be replaced with celery root;
  • Sake (alcoholic beverage obtained by fermentation of rice) - replace with sherry wine (light, dry);
  • Tangerine - a fruit very close to the mandarin;
  • We replace spinach with sorrel.
