A press conference was held today at the Ministry of Health on the occasion of the upcoming National Obesity Week entitled "The role of the school in creating a healthy eating pattern-2. The events are held under the patronage of Dr. Rumyana Jeleva, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Rumyana Neykova, an Olympic champion,
are battling obesity for the fourth time.
According to data provided by Stefka Petrova, a national consultant in nutrition and dietetics, 10.8% of children between the ages of 1 and 5 are overweight. Of these, 8% are overweight and 2.8% are obese.
Research covering children from all ethnic groups in our country shows that the Bulgarian ethnic group has the biggest problem with obesity and overweight.
Doctors explained that 68% of children over the age of 13 spend more than 3 hours a day in front of a computer, which affects the most important determinant of children's health - weight. In addition to low physical activity, the cause of overweight is the consumption of high-fat foods, sugary foods and reduced intake of fruits and vegetables.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maya Konstantinova from the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Children's Diseases explained that obesity is not a cosmetic problem, but a serious disease that must be treated quickly and adequately. A gene has been found that predisposes to weight gain, but obesity is a polygenic disease. With proper exercise and diet, this problem can be overcome, even if there is a genetic predisposition.
The opening of a center for training children in healthy eating in Sofia is forthcoming. In it, nutritionists will teach children how to choose the right food for them.
