A diet rich in oily fish helps prolong life expectancy in people with prostate cancer.
Regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of death from the disease by 34 to 40%, according to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
It is also estimated that those who consume the largest amounts of saturated fat are twice as likely not to survive the disease.
Nearly 40,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year in the United Kingdom, 10,000 of which are fatal. In Bulgaria, about 1530 new cases of prostate cancer are added every year.
Age is defined as a risk factor for prostate cancer. Heredity also plays a role. Men with a family history of the disease are about 2 times more likely to develop it.
Diet is also essential.
The US study included 525 men with a mean age of 70 with prostate cancer.
During the study period, participants were surveyed about their eating habits, including the consumption of various types of fats.
Within 20 years, 222 people had died of prostate cancer and 268 from other causes.
According to the scientists, the diet has a strong effect on tumors that are at an early stage of development.
Other studies also show that fish has a prophylactic value against prostate cancer. Experts recommend oily fish such as sardines, salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring.
In order to prevent the disease, doctors advise every man over 50 to undergo at least once a year examination by a urologist and medical examinations.
The results are published in the American Journal of Epidemiology .
