The risk of endometriosis in women whose diet is rich in omega-3 fatty acids is 22% lower. Conversely, for women whose diet includes higher amounts of trans fats, it rises to 48%, according to a study by British medics published in the journal Human Reproduction.
Endometriosis is a disease in which endometrial tissue spreads outside the uterus. Some women have no complaints of endometriosis, but most complain of severe pelvic pain, especially on days of menstrual bleeding. 10% of those affected develop infertility. Therapy includes medication to relieve pain, hormonal drugs and surgery.
The study analyzed the diet and health of more than 71,000 women over 12 years. 1199 of them were diagnosed with endometriosis. From the data obtained, experts conclude that diet is an important factor in the development of endometriosis.
The study's lead author, Stacy Mismer, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine at Harvard Medical School and Gynecology Hospital in Boston, said new research was needed to show how Omega-3 fatty acids protect against endometriosis.
Until now, omega-3s have been strongly recommended in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids are found mainly in oily fish.
