The effects of daily consumption of peanuts on nutrition, satiety, energy expenditure and body weight were studied at Purdue University. Dr. Richard Mats says that the high content of protein and fiber in them would play an important role in overcoming hunger and maintaining shape.
The data are consistent with the results of large studies showing low BMI in people who often consume small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter. The present study includes three diets, each of which provides a predetermined portion of nuts equal to 500 kcal. For comparison, we will note that a handful of peanuts contain about 150 kcal. In the first group, consumption is free, without guidance. The second group - with supplementation - were instructed on how to include nuts in individual meals. In the third - substitution - a replacement of 500 kcal of the daily ration with a corresponding amount of peanuts was applied.
Participants in the first two regimens report that they are full and cannot eat the entire amount of food they normally consume per day. This leads to weight loss even in the group with the addition of extra calories. This is another example that not starving, but overcoming it with a small but healthy food is an important step towards weight control. Peanuts are not only delicious, but in this case useful for our health.
