Dementia is a syndrome that is characterized by an acquired decrease in mental activity and impaired social adaptation of the patient (reduced ability to work and self-care). The disease develops as a result of brain damage.

Disorders such as: impaired cognitive functions (concentration, speech, memory, gnosis praxis), difficulty making decisions, as well as planning and controlling actions are observed.

Such a health problem occurs mainly in the elderly, as they have the development of vascular and degenerative diseases, atrophic changes in the brain.

Useful foods for dementia

  • Cholesterol lowering products: dry red wine (in small quantities and during meals), almonds, avocados, legumes, blueberries, oats, vegetable oil (corn, flaxseed, sunflower).
  • Some scientists believe that the Mediterranean diet significantly reduces the risk of developing dementia. This diet includes small amounts of meat and meat products, olive oil is consumed, many vegetables, nuts, fruits and fish are consumed.
  • Products with low content of "bad" cholesterol: dairy products, lean fish and meat, poultry, seafood, sauerkraut, spices (curcumin, saffron, cinnamon, sage, lemon balm).
  • Research shows that caffeine also contributes to the "destruction" of cholesterol plaques in cerebral blood vessels.
Recommendations
  • Dishes should be steamed, boiled, baked or stewed.
  • Use a minimum amount of salt.
  • Food should be taken in small portions, do not overeat, eat little in the evening.
  • Drink clean water - not less than 30 milliliters per kilogram of body weight.

Dangerous and harmful foods in dementia

For prevention against the development of dementia and in the presence of the problem, the consumption of products containing cholesterol should be avoided.

Cholesterol foods:
  • fats of animal origin (poultry skin, bacon, etc.);
  • egg yolk;
  • by-products (kidneys, brain, liver);
  • yellow cheese, cream, fresh milk;
  • concentrated broths;
  • bone broth;
  • mayonnaise;
  • butter dough products;
  • white bread, pastries;
  • sugar.
