Characteristic

The sodium salt of fumaric acid or sodium fumarate is a dietary supplement belonging to the group of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are substances that fight oxidative processes, leading to spoilage of products and protect them from rancidity; they can be of natural origin or obtained artificially.

The substance is a white powder with a sour taste and odorless. It is obtained by the reaction of fumaric acid with sodium hydroxide.

Sodium fumarate has an unclear status because it has not passed or is in the process of passing the necessary tests and examinations.

Use

The additive can be used as an acid regulator (usually added to beverages, caramel, chewing gum, etc.). In the food industry it is used in the production of wine, in fillings and additives in bakery and confectionery products, in dry and jelly desserts, in instant tea products, in canned fruits and more. It is used in the treatment of psoriasis, has a mild laxative effect.

Impact on humans

Nutritional supplements are biologically active substances, therefore they can be both useful and harmful to the body. Of course, in no case do they cure, but help as a prophylactic. For each additive there is a certain maximum permissible amount, harmless to humans. For E 365, this is 6 mg per kilogram of body weight.
