Calcium aluminosilicate is a fine white powder, odorless and tasteless. Decomposes under the influence of hydrofluoric acid, has a medium degree of solubility in bases and strong acids, does not dissolve in ethanol. Calcium aluminosilicate is widespread in nature, it is part of the earth's crust. Aluminosilicates in general and calcium in particular include many minerals: feldspar (anortite, albite, orthoclase), mica (nepheline, muscovite), clay minerals. The additive is obtained by hydrothermal synthesis.
In the food industry the substance is used in the production of granulated sugar, dextrose powder. E 556 is also part of many powdered and bulk products: salt, sugar and their substitutes, spices, pasta improvers, milk powder and cream. Calcium aluminosilicate is also used in the production of hard cheeses and cheese products, and in foods tightly wrapped in foil. Also in the technological production of confectionery, products in the form of tablets, biologically active additives. In must, juices and wines, the additive acts as a filter substance, clarifier, sorbent and flocculant. The food supplement E 556 participates in the process of softening and purifying the water. Natural aluminosilicates are used in the production of ceramics and mixtures, cement and glass.
The use of calcium aluminosilicate in the food industry is strictly regulated. Its quantity should not exceed 10 to 30 grams per 1 kilogram of finished product. At the same time, the supplement is considered safe, the maximum allowable daily dose for humans has not been determined. No studies on the effects of the substance on the body have been performed. Nutritionists and gastroenterologists recommend limiting the consumption of foods containing aluminosilicates, as theoretically they could help exacerbate chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
