Healthy eating and lifestyle are the main methods to help fight the development of cancer.
Green tea, broccoli, turmeric and pomegranate help fight prostate cancer, according to a new study by Professor Robert Thomas of Belford Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospital.
The oncologist conducted a six-month study among 203 men, all of whom suffer from prostate cancer. He divided them into two groups. The former was given daily extracts of polyphenol-rich foods such as turmeric, pomegranate, broccoli and green tea. The second group was placebo. Six months later, the research team, led by Prof. Robert Thomas, found that when taking capsules with polyphenol-rich food extracts, prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels were 63% lower than in the placebo group. The findings of the study were presented at a conference of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in Chicago, Illinois.
Prostate-specific antigen is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated levels may indicate an enlarged prostate, inflammation or prostate cancer. PSA levels can also be used to monitor the efficacy of therapeutic regimens on prostate condition.
"Healthy eating and lifestyle are the main methods to help fight cancer. Patients can now turn to nutritional supplements that have been shown to have an effect, "said Prof. Thomas.
