Late afternoon dinners may have more trouble losing weight .

Spanish researchers followed 420 overweight people for a period of 5 months. The volunteers have a special weight loss program .

The program includes a Mediterranean-type diet rich in plant proteins and healthy fats and vegetables . Participants can choose what time to have lunch.

According to their choice, they are divided into groups with an early lunch before 3 o'clock and with a late lunch after 3 o'clock.

Despite the same type of diet , those who ate lunch in the early lunch hours lost much more and easier, it became clear after analyzing the results.

The research team found that late lunch led to slower digestion of food, which hindered weight loss .

According to experts, an even distribution of food every 4 hours helps to control body weight and reduces the risk of obesity .

As the study was conducted in Spain , where lunch is considered the most basic and important meal of the day, additional studies involving different ethnicities are needed.

The study is published in the International Journal of Obesity .
