" Eat breakfast alone, share lunch with a friend, and give dinner to your enemy !" We have all heard this saying, but have we thought about how much meaning it has.

Breakfast is a very important meal - it can either make or break your day. It is important for replenishing the body with nutrients and energy for the whole day.

According to nutritionists, a balanced diet should include 3 to 5 meals a day, the first of which must be breakfast. It should supply the body with about 25% of the daily energy intake and over 20% of the daily recommended dose of whole grains .

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutritionfound that regular breakfast also reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The study involved men who did not have the habit of eating breakfast. The results show that they have a 21% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The food we eat for breakfast is just as important as the morning meal itself , experts explain.

According to another study, the consumption of carbohydrates with breakfast reduces the risk of high blood glucose levels.

This does not apply to simple carbohydrates , such as refined sugar and starch, which increase blood sugar levels when consumed, but to complex ones, which make up whole grains, bread, rice, pasta , fruits, vegetables and legumes.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, breakfast should be rich in fat and protein . This combination is extremely useful for emotional and health for the whole day and for a longer period of time.

The preferred breakfast for Bulgarians continues to include pasta. A national sociological survey conducted in 2011 shows that 76% choose banitsa, croissant, tutmanik , sandwiches and others for breakfast . Only 6% of respondents eat fruit and 9% choose whole grain products to start the day.
