Celery And Carrots Useful Against Colon Cancer

In this article, learn more about Celery And Carrots Useful Against Colon Cancer. An ingredient in fruits and vegetables slows the development of colon cancer..

The flavonoid luteolin, an ingredient in fruits and vegetables, helps slow the development of colon cancer, scientists at Halim University in South Korea have found.

Luteolin has antioxidant properties and is found in celery, carrots, olive oil, green peppers, thyme, chamomile, mint, rosemary and others.

Previous studies have also proven the antioxidant and anti-cancer properties of luteolin.

The results of the new study show that the flavonoid inhibits the cellular signaling pathways IGF and PI3K, which are associated with the growth of colon cancer cells.

These cancer cells are known to have elevated levels of IGF-II compared to normal colon tissue. According to researchers, this is part of a mechanism that allows uncontrolled cell division - and therefore the rapid development of cancer.

Scientists have found that luteolin can block the secretion of IGF-II by colon cancer cells, which stops cell division and leads to their death.

More research is needed to explain the specific way the ingredient helps fight cancer, says Prof. Jung Han Yon Park of the research team.

The results are published in BMC Gastroenterology .
