A new study finds that a woman around the age of 30 who has consumed 2 liters of diet cola a day for years has caries and tooth erosion, similar to those taking methamphetamine and crack.

A report published in the journal General Dentistry states that the woman drank soda daily for 3-5 years and had the same damage to the tooth structure as the 29-year-old addict who participated in the study.

Both normal and diet cola are highly acidic , such as methamphetamine and crack. In combination with poor hygieneof the oral cavity, citric and phosphoric acid in soda, can cause significant damage and tooth decay, explains the research team.

 


The woman who took part in the study admits that she has not visited a dentist for years. A large percentage of her teeth are eroded , discolored and cannot be cured and saved from extraction.

The American Beverage Association, which represents soft drink manufacturers , says the results of the study should not be taken lightly and the consumption of diet cola should be stopped.

It is important to maintain personal hygiene and regular preventive examinations by licensed dentists, experts explain. The consumption of carbonated drinks should not be overdone, of course, they added.
