Potassium hydroxide is a hygroscopic colorless crystals, can be in the form of white flakes, pellets, liquid mass, rods. The solubility of the additive in ethanol, water and methanol is good. The substance has the ability to decompose organic materials. Concentrated potassium hydroxide solution causes severe burns to mucous membranes and skin.
The additive E 525 is used in the food industry in the preparation of various cocoa products, also in frozen potatoes and baby food. Potassium hydroxide makes it easier to clean and peel roots, fruits and vegetables.
Outside the food industry, potassium hydroxide is used in the production of methane and in the absorption of acid gases. In cosmetics it is used in the production of soaps, shampoos, shaving creams and bleaches.
The additive E 525 is dangerous in case of direct contact of a concentrated solution of the substance with the skin and mucous membranes, causing strong chem. burns. It is especially dangerous for the eyes. Getting into them can lead to blindness.
