Characteristic

E 577 refers to substances containing potassium. Potassium is necessary for the functioning of the human body intracellular ion. It contributes to the normalization of cardiac activity, participates in nerve regulation, in the contraction of skeletal muscles, in maintaining water-electrolyte balance, in the synthesis of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

Use

There is information that E 577 is used in the food industry as an additive to some carbonated beverages.

The substance potassium gluconate is widely used in pharmacology.

Impact on humans

Potassium ions increase the excitability and conductivity of cardiomyocytes, prevent the appearance of edema, participate in the synthesis of glucose (gluconeogenesis) and its decomposition (glycolysis), maintain the osmotic pressure in cells. Potassium deficiency impairs the conduction of nerve impulses, hypotension, muscle atony, cardiac arrhythmia, heart block of various origins, edema, tinnitus, insomnia may occur.

At present, the food additive E 577 is considered safe for use, but in some countries it is prohibited for use in food.
