Consumption of fish oil can help more in the fight against high cholesterol in chronic heart failure than widely used drugs. Dr Jose Gonzalez Junati, spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology, points out that it is not just drugs that are needed to treat heart failure. Preparations with omega-3-unsaturated fatty acids, extracted from fish oil itself, are widely used, but experts advise patients to take advantage of cheaper options - supplements of such oil or even consumption of oilier fish.

These fatty acids improve the condition of cell membranes on the one hand, and on the other - increase the level of 'good' cholesterol. In addition, they are thought to have a heart rate stabilizing effect. Statins are drugs aimed primarily at lowering 'bad' cholesterol, and this has little effect on heart failure.
