For Headaches, Drink More Water

7 glasses of water a day relieve migraines, scientists from the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, have found.

Regular water consumption and adequate hydration reduce the symptoms of headaches and migraines, thus reducing the need for painkillers.

Drinking about 7 glasses of water a day is enough to relieve pain and improve the quality of life of people who regularly suffer from headaches, found researchers from the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands.

The study included more than 100 people suffering from severe or mild headaches.

Experts provide guidance to participants on relieving discomfort, including reducing stress, improving sleep, and avoiding caffeine consumption.

Half of the volunteers also drink 1.5 liters of water a day for three months, apart from their normal fluid intake.

Participants fill out a questionnaire about their health. It is found that those who drink more water feel an improvement in the symptoms of headaches.

The benefits of water consumption may be due to the placebo effect, experts say.

Water is considered a natural "cure" for headaches. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of it.

The brain is made up of 90% water. When its content decreases, a headache occurs, through which the brain warns of the need for water.

The results are published in the journal Family Practice.
