Consumption of large amounts of carbonated beverages can cause seizures or irregular heartbeat , arrhythmia. This conclusion is reached by scientists who describe a similar case in a 31-year-old woman.
Regular and excessive consumption of soft drinks leads to a pronounced loss of potassium, which is the cause of life-threatening arrhythmias, they explain.
The 31-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with suspected arrhythmia . Her test results showed blood potassium levels of 2.4 mmol / L and a heart rate of 610 milliseconds.
Normal potassium levels vary between 3.5-5.1 mmol / L, and the normal heart rate in women is 450 milliseconds.
Researchers ask the woman a series of questions about her dietary habits and the frequency of soft drinks. It was found that after the age of 15, she almost completely replaced the consumption of water with carbonated beverages .
The researchers explained that when they stopped taking soft drinks, potassium levels returned to normal, as did the woman's heart rate.
Other studies have shown that frequent and increased consumption of carbonated beverages is the cause of damage to muscle tissue in the chest, ventricular tachycardia , atrial fibrillation and others.
The study aims to increase the taking of a correct medical history when examining patients complaining of arrhythmia and seizures. Among the questions of specialists should include the content of the diet and the consumption of soft drinks, experts say.
The results and conclusions of the described case were presented at EHRA Europace 2013 in Athens.
