Bulgarians - Fifth In Overweight In Europe

60% of European citizens over the age of 18 are overweight, with almost 20% being obese

At a press conference, Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Handjiev - Chairman of the Bulgarian Association "Obesity and Concomitant Diseases", announced that Bulgaria ranks fifth in overweight in Europe.

According to Handjiev - 60% of European citizens over the age of 18 are overweight, and almost 20% are obese.

Studies show that in the last few years the physiological norms of bread consumption have increased by 30%. Assoc. Prof. Handjiev emphasized that the increased consumption of pasta is one of the main prerequisites for obesity.
According to the expert, people should consume more wholemeal bread, which is richer in fiber and vitamin B. High-fiber foods reduce the risk of constipation and colon cancer.

Handjiev said that with the WHO, measures against obesity, which is taking on the scale of a pandemic, can only be effective if they are harmoniously combined between the efforts of professionals, the media, governmental and non-governmental organizations and food producers.

Doctors remind that obesity is a problem of social importance, as it is a prerequisite for the emergence of cardiovascular complications, the severity of which and mortality from them Bulgaria is one of the first places in the world.

On October 24, on the occasion of the International Day against Obesity, free consultations and measurements will be held in Sofia on the degree of overweight, obesity and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The three places where the examinations will be performed are in front of the National Palace of Culture, at the beginning of the South Park and next to Lake Ariana in Borisova Garden. The starting time of the initiative is 11 o'clock.
