Higher Taxes Will Fight Obesity In Belgium

The money raised will be used for programs that stimulate healthy eating, active lifestyle and the fight against excess weight ...

A working group from the scientific Itinera Institute proposes the introduction of higher taxes on foods and beverages with a high sugar content.

Belgian experts suggest that the funds collected from taxes in regional budgets be used for programs to prevent overweight and the consequences of obesity.

According to reports, between 20 and 30% of Belgians suffer from some form of obesity. Every fifth child in the country is overweight. According to RIA Novosti, it is disturbing that these numbers are constantly growing.

Experts have proposed introducing a tax of 3 eurocents on each liter of sugar-containing beverage. The price of a bottle of Fanta from 0.33 liters will rise from 51 to 52 euro cents, and for a 1.5 liter bottle of Pepsi - from 1.03 to 1.08 euros.

It is estimated that even a minimal price increase, which will remain difficult for consumers, will allow the collection of 36 million euros. This money will be used for programs that promote healthy eating, active lifestyle and the fight against excess weight.

According to scientists, the excess calories contained in sweetened beverages and confectionery are one of the causes of obesity in Western society.
