Characteristic

Calcium silicate is a fine white powder that has no specific odor or taste. It is characterized by low bulk density. The additive E 552 is widespread in nature, is contained in 75% of the earth's crust and is part of about 1/3 of the known minerals (mica, clay, feldspar). The substance does not dissolve in water. Calcium silicate is obtained by heating calcium oxide and silicon mixtures or by hydrothermal synthesis. Destroys on contact with strong acids.

Use

In the food industry, calcium silicate is mainly used as an agent to prevent lumps and sticking. First of all, it is added to spices, foil-wrapped products, bulk powder products (salt, sugar and their substitutes). The food additive E 552 is a part of cheeses and products from them, it is used for surface treatment of confectionery. The substance is also used in the manufacture of products in the form of tablets, biological supplements. In the process of production of improvers for pastries, powdered milk, spices, sugar, salt, calcium silicates are added as anti-caking agents and separators.

In pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, calcium silicates are used in the manufacture of powders and powders. They are also widely used in the production of ceramics, glass, cement materials, enamels, glazed coatings. Silicates of synthetic origin are components of cement, concrete, refractory materials.

In industry, the additive E 522 is a solid lubricant, catalyst carrier, adsorbent, filler in the production of paints, varnishes, paper and rubber.

Impact on humans

The maximum amount of calcium silicate should not exceed 10 - 30 grams per kilogram of finished product. Detailed studies on the effects of E 552 on human health have not been performed. In most countries of the world it is considered harmless in compliance with the permissible quantities for use.
